A rare woodblock print on paper depicting a rural landscape scene, pencil signed to the lower right margin, sight 16.5 x 24.1cm (6 1/2 x 9 1/2in) - John William (J.W.) Beatty, 1869-1941, a well-known early 20th century Canadian painter and forerunner of the landscape art movement which became known by the Group of Seven; he began painting scenes in Algonquin park in 1909 (11 years before the Group of Seven formed), worked as an Official War Artist in 1917, and was an educator at the Ontario College of Art from 1912-1941
